MIDWAY BAKERY ON MAIN

Last week my daughter and I were lucky enough to spend the entire day together having fun and hanging out in Midway.  Towards the end of the day, I realized the new “Midway Bakery On Main” was still open so we decided we should probably polish off our day with some sweets.

They were actually beyond closing time, but invited us in anyway.  We picked up a few cupcakes and a gluten free brownie, which was a total bonus that they offered gluten free, and asked if we could stay for a while to enjoy our goodies and they were more than welcoming.

The sweets were FANTASTIC!! Absolutely delicious and home made, which we love!  And, while we were there, we learned that they also offer fresh home made breads, sandwiches and soups!  Which I’m guessing are also amazing.  Their brownies were just so YUMMY-decadent, chocolaty goodness!  I can’t say enough great things about this new charming Midway bakery.

Our little town is growing, but it’s great to know that that growth includes more of these family owned, mom & pops type of businesses so we don’t lose the small town charm of this magical area.  And may I also say that the owner was so sweet and kind, we’re just really looking forward to visiting again.  They made us feel so at home, it was really comforting to enjoy our goodies and not feel rushed.

So when you visit Midway, you won’t want to miss this gem of a bakery.  It’s quaint and cozy, but worth every penny!

EASTER SUNDAY AT HOME IN THE HEBER VALLEY

Easter Sunday seemed to be the perfect time for our little family to enjoy a wonderful day together.  But for us, still be relatively new to Utah, this year would be a great year to explore all the Heber Valley has to offer for holiday fun.  Why you ask? Well, because our daughter is now old enough to really experience and enjoy the local events and frankly there are so many, it’s hard to decide what to do first.

So…. the fun began Saturday as we visited the Fill Er’ Up Coffee Station in Downtown Midway for their annual Easter Egg Hunt.  If you’ve never been there, this coffee shop is loaded with antique toys and relics giving it incredible character and a hominess you won’t find at any chain coffee market.  The owners are there making sure you’re cared for an they’ve just got the sweetest young ladies around making coffee and swinging sweets!

Trying to be timely, we arrived at promptly at 10am, but the hunt ended promptly at 10:01:10.  Fastest egg hunt I’ve ever seen; these kids were PROS who had obviously attended this event year after year.  But we still managed to have a wonderful time as the amazing owners noticed Giada’s basket was empty and approached her right away asking if she’d gotten any eggs.  She said that she hadn’t….they then gave her a free ice cream and filled her empty basket up with little prizes which really really made her happy and really, no child left empty handed.  They saw to that and as a result, they’ve gained an extremely loyal customer from this wonderful gesture. We love you guys and I’ve been there three times since.

Next stop:  Zermatt Spring Festival– And boy did they do family fun right!  It was quite an experience for only $6 per child.   The morning started with a quick visit with the Easter Bunny at their indoor shopping market (and of course a few purchases to keep our girl entertained until the fun really started).  With so much going on, we hit their baby animal pen next, then the carousel, followed by face painting, trampoline jumping, bounce house and a massive Easter Egg Hunt on their property with great friends.  Giada left with about 30 eggs filled with goodies and she was STOKED!  Afterwards we were absolutely looking for food to recharge, so we quickly decided it was a great time to visit their food truck festival  with about 10 vendors and plenty to choose from!  We enjoyed an awesome meal  from Lola’s Incredible food truck and dined al fresco on their outdoor giant chess board.  BTW, if you live in the Heber Valley and you haven’t tried Lolas, you absolutely should.  It’s an incredible meal….you won’t regret it.

Our last stop was a quick visit to the new Midway Bakery on Main– and YES.  YES.  Just stop there.  Bread, Brownies, Cookies…Cinnamon Rolls.  Yes.  A fantastic new addition to our little town.  YUM.

After all the Easter Saturday fun, little Giada was exhausted; but we still managed to come home and play with bubbles for about 2 hours.  It left me feeling extremely grateful and also thinking  about how fortunate we really are.  Living in this beautiful place with great people, great food and a spectacular view.

The Easter morning surprises for Giada were really wonderful little surprises for us as well.  As the Easter Bunny came to visit our home early and hid not only about 50 Easter eggs in our yard but also left a cute little basket full of fun goodies someone was unbelievably excited.  Like way more excited than we even anticipated.  Seeing things thru her eyes is really the best gift ever.  Daddy made a beautiful breakfast Strava and afterwards we rode bikes and made Pane di Pasqua (Easter Bread), a family/generational tradition.  I’ve baked this special bread with my mom for many years and my heart leaps now knowing Giada will create it along side me.  I’m excited to pass on this art of baking our customary bread to her; it’s always been a very special event for myself and my mother. We had an absolutely lovely family day.  Best Easter ever.  That’s all.

Hope your Easter was magical too and you were able to partake in all that the Heber Valley has to offer.  As a new parent, I was just completely blown away at all this wonderful community has to offer for kids and families.  So much holiday fun!

TUBING AT SOLDIER HOLLOW

Holy fun winter day at Solider Hollow Tubing Hill!  Our family had a blast enjoying something unique to Midway, Utah– Solider Hollow Olympic Park.  The park offers so many ways to have fun- skate skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and a fantastic view at their larger than life restaurant.  Not to mention a delicious grilled cheese sandwich!

Our three year old had a blast! Not to mention that we had a blast too!  I highly recommend it and living in the mountains of Utah!

COMMUNITY UPDATE

As winter quickly speeds to an end, we’re savoring every chance to be on the slopes. Yet even as we watch the snow fall, we can’t help but look ahead to all the excitement that spring brings. What a wonderful season to be in Park City and the Heber Valley! We’re anticipating longer days spent outdoors exploring our local businesses and picturesque surroundings. There is so much to see and do this time of year. FEATURED  I  THE MAIN STREET SOCIAL CLUB

SPRING GRUV  I  PARK CITY MOUNTAIN
March 24, 2018 – April 8, 2018

Enjoy 16 days full of free concerts in the two villages, as well as the 22nd Annual Pond Skimming Contest! This is one of those traditions that has been wild from the start. The Pond Skimming Contest is Park City’s most popular party and is the true indicator that spring has arrived. Contestants must dress in costume (the funkier the better) as they attempt to cross a 100-foot pond on skis or a snowboard. The pond and the excitement happen at mid-mountain just outside Red Pine Lodge. Must be 10 years of age or older to enter. Spectators will need a lift or gondola ticket to watch.

BIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS  I  SOLDIER HOLLOW

Whether you’re ready to compete or would prefer to remain a spectator, the Biathlon Championships are an event to remember! Participants have the opportunity to compete on the 2002 Olympic Range. Discover why biathlon is the most popular winter sport in Europe!

Interested in a Biathlon experience without the competition? Solider Hollow offers the “Biathlon Experience” for any aspiring Olympian! Participants are coached by professional staff as they learn to shoot with precision rifles that are similar to equipment used during the Olympic Games. During the winter, you will either ski or snowshoe and in the summer, choose running or biking. The biathlon course give participants a sense of authentic biathlon competition.

Do you have a favorite spot you’d like to share? Did you visit one of our recommended restaurants? Give us a shout. We love hearing from you!

WINTER EVENTS

JG

Our family is so excited that the snow has arrived! Every chance we get we’re savoring the chance to be outside, snowshoeing, skiing and even building a snowman or two. There are no shortage of winter activities in our community, but below are a few we’d recommend you check out, whether you’re thrilled to be outside or huddled up with the one you love, winter is the perfect time to be in Heber Valley.

WASATCH CITIZEN SERIES

The Wasatch Citizens Series (WCS) ski races have been Utah’s premier nordic skiing events since 1979. When the US Ski Team moved its coaching staff to Park City in the 1980’s, the WCS became a training ground for many of the country’s top skiers. The Park City Junior Nordic Ski Team has launched several young athletes to national recognition, and some of our older participants have consistently won National Masters titles. Members of several U.S. Olympic Teams, including Laura McCabe, Wendy Wagner, and Rosie Brennan, began their skiing careers in our races.

This is a 10-kilometer free technique (skate) race with start and finish in the stadium. Shorter distances for youngsters, oldsters, novices, and sit skiers. Registration will be in the Day Lodge from 8:30 to 9:30. Younger juniors and sit skiers start at 10:00, and adults at about 10:20 after the others have finished. Lunch will be served in the lodge after the race, compliments of Nate Wade Subaru.

CHOCOLATE LOVERS TRAIN RIDE

Enjoy a relaxing and entertaining evening ride and sample wonderful chocolate delights, including from local favorite Mrs Calls Candies! You’ll also be treated to live music with local musicians. Ticket includes chocolate and other samples. Other items will be available in the concession car.

Seating is limited so you can stretch out and relax while we cruise down the tracks. Don’t forget to bring a blanket so you can snuggle up and enjoy all the magic the night has to offer!

SKIJORING

Western skijoring is an action packed competition where a horse and rider pull a skier at a fast pace through a course that includes gates, jumps, and rings. Join us on March 2-3, 2018 at Soldier Hollow for this fast action sport! Skijoring is an egalitarian event open to any and everyone who has a passion for horses or skiing, or both. And if your love for these two also includes fast speeds and friendly competition, then skijoring may just be your calling.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit one of the coolest spectacles in Utah, you might want to hit the Midway Ice Castles before they melt away.  It takes hundreds of man hours to create the Ice sculptures.  It’s filled with slides and tunnels..bridges and passages and even Elsa is there to greet all the kids for a little piece of Frozen.  And my daughter just loves it!  She has really started to ask about it after we go longing to return.  We even had the company of our great friends Chip & Kasidy and their new son Will; they own one of the best board shops in town; Marty’s at Kimball Junction.

It’s been such a fun winter so far, just one more reason to love Utah.  Even when the snow isn’t falling:)
